Understanding the GRE Exam Scoring Scales

GRE exam is one of the most in demand exams in assessing a person’s knowledge and skills. A person who wants to get admitted to one of the finest schools on earth. There are two most important sections of the GRE exam. They are verbal reasoning and the quantitative reasoning. In these two forms, the scores are determined on scale points of 200 to 800 with an increase of 10 points. Take note that both the GRE comprehensive exam and the GRE verbal score range are between 200 and 800. Therefore, if you are giving a computerized GRE, you will take 58 questions.

Learning The Scoring Scale

In the computer based test, the quantitative scores depend on the number of questions which are attempted by the person giving the test. Since the GRE is an extremely competitive examination, you should be aware of the average GRE scores. For the verbal section, the average score is 460. For the quantitative section, the score is 590. The writing section has an average rating of 4.0. The revised GRE exam scoring scale may not be known to many exam aspirants and hence, let us discuss it immediately. The GRE verbal score under the improved system,  ranges between 130 and 170 along with a single point increment. On the other hand, quantitative reasoning score range is also between 130 and 170 with single point increments again. However, the analytical writing score range does not change in the revised structure of the GRE as well, and it is between 0 and 6 with half point increments. The total score for the GRE can range from 400 to 1600. With the help of GRE exam scores scale, it is possible to determine whether the student has the required skills to do a particular course or not. In analytical writing section, the score 6 indicates that the student has understood all his concepts and has real intelligence quotient and ability to apply the knowledge he has learned. However, if the same score is 2.5 or 3, then it can be concluded that the candidate is lacking in developmental skills and needs to improve a lot. If you wish to graduate in life sciences, then a score of 568 in Mathematics and 464 in the verbal section can be acceptable.
